Indeed like everyone teachers also deserve a break. Invariably teachers have summer and winter breaks apart from short breaks in between. Some schools have five days a week, some six days and some one Saturday off and so on. There are certain leaves mandated as CL, ML etc.

Well leave is essential to unwind, refresh, catch up on family front and fulfil other personal and social obligations. Again teachers at various stages of life have different requirements and need breaks accordingly.

I am however desirous of talking about making these breaks more useful and meaningful. I remember as Head and Director I would request teachers to upgrade themselves with certain professional work also during these breaks.

Teachers were generally happy to get these Own Time Work (OTW) to stay relevant, get certifications and add on to their knowledge and skill. In turn students would benefit from these teachers.

I would recommend some of the following activities related to their upgrading and upskilling during these long breaks apart from having family and personal time.

– Carry out self-appraisal to check hits and misses
– Book reviews; subject specific and general
– Visit websites of different schools and check out best practices
– Go over the teachers’ manual published by CBSE
– Check websites of CBSE, NCERT, MHRD and other institutions associated with education to see the trends, practices and development
– Could pick up some short online or offline courses; e.g. MOOCs
– Attend some relevant workshops and seminars
– Check out relevant future skills required in the industry
– Brush up areas of NEP, NCF and NCrF
– Look at certain important Soft Skills like goal setting, communication, emotional intelligence, stress management, time management, cognitive flexibility, interpersonal relationships and so on
– Do a SWOT and take appropriate actions
– Write down certain points as to how you can become more effective teacher and add value to students and school

In the meantime enjoy the balance two weeks or so as most schools will open in July. Students look forward to getting back to schools to meet their friends and teachers. Remember to welcome the students with warmth and enthusiasm.
